New Year, New Beginnings

Welcome!

Dear fellow Roboticians,

Welcome to the Robotics Club!

First of all, congratulations! COVID-19 has shown us just how big a role technology plays in our lives, and has also brought us our highest number of trial applicants ever (a total of 120!), a testament to students’ beliefs in the potential Robotics and STEM. As per previous years, we were only able to take in a total of 8 members to our club, and we wish all that did not manage to get in all the best in whichever path life leads them to. We at Robotics would thus like to commend your outstanding performance and your spirit of 自强不息 that you displayed during our trials.

ExCO 2021 Photoshoot

Prior to the start of the first CCA session, we had a 15-minute photo-taking session for the 2021 Robotics Executive Committee.

The Robotics ExCO 2021 is as follows:

  • Liu Jie Xu – President
  • Neo Hao Jun – Treasurer
  • Teng Zhao Hang – Quartermaster
  • Ivan Tung – Cup Lead
  • Lau Tat Hong – VEX Lead

Feel free to approach any of the ExCO members or your other seniors should you face any difficulties along your CCA journey. You can view the full list of Robotics members here.

Mr Cheong's Speech

To start off the first official CCA session, our teacher-in-charge, Mr Cheong gave a speech, highlighting the standards expected of all Robotics CCA members.

In his speech, Mr Cheong also noted the difficulties faced by our CCA as a result of COVID-19, and reminded everyone to treasure our in-person CCA sessions by keeping masked up and following Safe Management Measures. He also mentioned that we should remain focused during our time in CCA and prepare adequately for all the competitions we would be undertaking.

Icebreakers

To allow everyone to get to know each other better, we had a variety of icebreakers for our first official CCA session.

Games we played included:
  • 2 truths 1 lie, where each member said three statements about himself. Two of these statements must be facts, or “truths,” and one must be a lie. The other members then try to guess which statement is the lie.
  • Basketball, to allow members to engage actively in physical activities despite the seemingly sedentary nature of Robotics.
  • Mafia, also known as Werewolf, a game which models a conflict between two groups: an informed minority, and an uninformed majority.
  • Find the Cubes, a game designed by our very own Robotics ExCO, where members (in groups) had to locate coloured cubes placed randomly around the school compound. Later on, groups also had to hide their own cubes for other groups to locate. Prizes were given out to the winning group.

These icebreakers allowed for productive bonding sessions amongst all the freshmen, and also enabled the newly-joined Secondary 1 members to get to know their seniors better.

Our CCA Structure

Robotic’s CCA days and timings are Wednesday (1530 – 1830) and Friday (1430 – 1830). While not compulsory, members of the CCA are free and encouraged to come back during other days or stay back later should they need more time to complete their work.

Ever since the integration of the High School and JC robotics sections, we have implemented a 6-year developmental program so that members can hone a more comprehensive skillset over a wider 6 year period rather than just 4 years, a similar rationale to the IP stream that HCI offers.

The Robotics Family

Our Last Physical Competition

I hope that you have enjoyed your first CCA session, and have come to understand that Robotics more than a CCA. It is a family, a community of like-minded individuals who push each other to innovate, explore, and excel in every area of their lives. I believe that in the coming years, you would find your spot in our Robotics family and continue doing work that would inspire batches to come.

Welcome to the High School Robotics Club.
