FLL 2019

Introduction

We have been participating in FLL since its launch here in Singapore. Similar to NRC, we have been performing relatively well and bagged many awards throughout the years, including a string of overall champion awards in the early 2010s.

An unexpected victory

After a brief hiatus in 2017, we restarted our participation in FLL by sending a junior team mentored by 2 senior members (Kai Cong and Jing Heng) so as to train them in key LEGO fundamentals and allow them to gain more competition experience.

Despite the fact that most members were involved in RoboCup prep at the same time, the team unexpectedly emerged as overall champions after a strong showing.

Despite having a little over a month to prepare for the FLL World Festival held in Detroit, USA that year, the team still rushed to rebuild all of their attachments from scratch in a bid to raise their standards to compete at the international level.

Unfortunately, the team simply did not have enough time to refine their programs as they had to juggle RoboCup on the other hand, and our performance was mediocre at best. Nonetheless, we are still thankful for the rare opportunity to represent Singapore at a prestigious international competition. We got to interact with teams from all corners of the world and even catch a few FIRST Robotics matches. It also provided us a good chance to test our limits and also impart key LEGO fundamentals to some of our junior members.

While this might be the last FLL competition that we might participate in due to dwindling levels of interest among members, we are glad that we were able to end off with a bang at the very least.
